Aaliyah made a strong feature debut opposite martial-arts legend Jet Li in this loose, Oakland-set reworking of Shakespeare. The singing star, who died in a plane crash the year after the film’s release, stars as Trish O’Day, daughter of a US crime boss (Delroy Lindo), who falls in love with ex-cop Han Sing (Li), who himself happens to be the scion of a rival crime family in Hong Kong. A minor hit upon its release, Romeo Must Die lodged in memory with its high-flying fight scenes and US Top Ten soundtrack album, and marked the directorial debut of veteran cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak (Prince of the City, Speed).
“Who needs iambic pentameter when you have Jet Li around? [The] martial-arts legend is poetry in motion [The filmmakers] keep the focus on the action. A wise move The stunts are the stars here” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).
